How does the Career Break system operate?

Members of An Garda Siochana may apply to avail of a career break, without pay, provided they have completed their probation and who have not reached the minimum retirement age, for a period of not less than one year and not more than five years. A member may apply to have a career break extended, provided the period does not exceed five years.

A career break may be allowed for the purpose of further education; domestic responsibilities or child minding.

Pension rights are affected by career breaks and such breaks do not count for Superannuation.

Special provisions apply to members availing of a career break and who may wish to remain in continued cover under the Life Assurance Scheme, GRA Critical Illness Scheme, Income Protection Scheme, Medical Aid Society, Benevolent Trust Fund etc. and it is incumbent on the individual to make arrangements prior to departure.
