How does the Job Sharing System work?

The Association has been successful in negotiating the introduction of job sharing in An Garda Síochána. This scheme will enable both male and female members who are unable to work on a full time basis due to other commitments to continue with their career. Agreed Report No.583 & HQ Directive 18/01 refer.

As a result of this agreement it is hoped that schemes will be set up immediately in each division. Members who have  an interest in participating in this arrangement should make the necessary application .

Subject to the exigencies of the service, there are no restrictions as to the work patterns that the member can follow (this is subject to the member and the Superintendent reaching agreement).

The member can negotiate working a number of ways e.g. four hours per day; or one full week on / one full week off or work three days one week and two days the next week, or work 10 days out of twenty working days in a roster.

Job sharing staff will be eligible for superannuation benefits on the same basis as full-time staff, save that each year of service given in a job-sharing capacity will reckon as six months service for superannuation purposes.

The member may retire at the age he / she was entitled to had he / she not undertaken job sharing for any period. However, if the member has not completed 30 years approved service and has not reach the compulsory retirement age the pension benefit will be deferred until 60 years of age. On compulsory retirement, regardless of service, pension will be paid immediately.

Both deferred and immediate pension payments are calculated on actual service

TERM TIME LEAVE SCHEME

Term Time Leave is available as a continuous period of 13 weeks commencing the beginning of June - or 10 weeks commencing the last week of June.

To be eligible to apply for participation in the Scheme, a member must have one or more pre-school or school going children aged 12 years or younger by relevant 1st June.

Participation in the scheme is at the discretion & agreement of the District Officer. Applications must be made by January & approved by February of the applicable year.

Term Time Leave is unpaid but there are tax efficiencies e.g. Annual tax credits can be spread over 39 weeks earnings rather than 52.

On early application, arrangements can be made with Pay Section to have e.g. 39 weeks pay spread over the full 52 weeks. HQ Directives 40/07 & 138/07 refer.
